Madison County is a gorgeous area in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Three cities and numerous communities are nestled in the vast forested mountains and valleys. It’s a haven for people seeking outdoor recreation, with Pisgah National Forest, the Appalachian Trial, and the French Broad River weaving their way throughout the area. For the more easy-going visitors, the county serves as a retreat to a quieter area that embraces its local traditions in art and music.

The 2020 US government census notes Madison County as 449.6 square miles and the 53rd largest county in NC by acreage. The population at the time of the census was only 21,193. The county shares borders with three NC counties and three Tennessee counties, making it a great place to branch out from and explore other areas.

The county has three cities, but numerous small towns and communities are tucked away. Each town has a unique appeal with different shops, historic spots, and more.

  • Hot Springs – Its claim to fame is the Hot Springs Resort & Spa. Mineral springs in the area brought visitors to the town for therapeutic retreats beginning in the 1800s. To this day, people still visit to relax. Downtown Hot Springs is tiny yet popular with travelers of all kinds. Visitors are welcome to stop in the charming town along the French Broad River to grab a bite to eat, stock up at a few small shops, and check out local events.
  • Marshall – As the county seat, Marshall has a prominent historic courthouse in its downtown district. Visitors can explore local stores, a coffee shop, and several restaurants. The Depot is a cherished venue where you can catch local musicians playing bluegrass and old-time music.
  • Mars Hill – The town is centered around Mars Hill University, a private liberal arts school. Local shops, an art gallery, restaurants, and a historic theater are adjacent to the university grounds and shared by students, staff, and residents of the town. Other draws of the area include Madison County’s historical barns trail, the Bailey Mountain Bike Park, the Wolf Ridge Ski Resort, and multiple cultural festivals.
