Farmers markets (tailgate markets) are a mainstay in the western region and most rural areas. They serve as an affordable space for local farmers and artisans to sell their goods and for communities to gather, socialize, and support one another. Some markets even have a rotation of artists playing live music. Most markets (but not all) tend to start up in spring and run through fall. And while many occur on weekends, you can find ones that run on weekdays.

Before You Go Shopping

With so many markets to choose from, there are a few factors you might think about before you go shopping:

  • Variety – How many vendors are present, and what are they offering?
  • Seasonality – What veggies and fruits are in season where you’re at?
  • Ambiance – Are you looking for a quick tailgate market in an urban setting or making this a full morning outing with the family?

Markets to Visit

  • WNC Farmers Market (Asheville) is the largest market in Western North Carolina and services all of it. Featuring outdoor and indoor stalls, the market is active year-round and provides the community with an ever-changing assortment of seasonal items. Check out local produce, crafts, and plants. Just be mindful of when you’re going. If it’s the growing season, there might be a crowd on any given day. Bonus: Stop by Jesse Israel & Sons Nursery on the market grounds near the entrance.
  • Asheville City Market and North Asheville Tailgate Market occur weekly in downtown Asheville. Both draw considerable foot traffic from surrounding lots and neighborhoods. Be sure to come early to find a good parking spot!
  • Madison County has markets in at least four towns, including Marshall, Mars Hill, Hot Springs, and Shelton Laurel.
  • Henderson County features 4 markets, each in a different town: Hendersonville, Flatrock, Etowah, and Mills River. Be sure to also check out the Henderson County Tailgate Market.
  • Haywood’s Historic Farmers Market is located in Waynesville, NC. Vendors throughout the county and nearby set up weekly to sell various goods.

Regardless of where you live, a farmers market is a wonderful place to learn more about your local farmers and meet the people in your community. Get out there and explore… and don’t forget your reusable bags!
